Pacquiao Picks Mosley, Roach Chooses Mayweather

MANILA, Philippines – American trainer Freddie Roach and his prized fighter, Filipino 7-division world champion Manny Pacquiao, failed to agree on who they think will win on May 1 when “Sugar” Shane Mosley takes on Floyd “Money” Mayweather, Jr.
According to Joaquin Henson of The Philippine Star, Roach predicted that Mayweather (40-0, with 25 KOs) will remain undefeated as he will beat Mosley by decision.

“Shane’s my friend and I hope he wins but he has trouble with speed and movement and likes guys to come to him so it’s going to be difficult,” Roach said in a guest column on London’s Boxing News as quoted in The Philippine Star article.

Pacquiao, on the other hand, has been saying that Mosley would prevail over Mayweather.
“I’m for Shane Mosley,” the pound-for-pound king said in an article by Abac Cordero of The Philippine Star.

“He must do the right preparation. If he does, then he has a very good chance against Mayweather,” he said of the World Boxing Association (WBA) super welterweight champion who has 46 wins (with 39 KOs), 5 losses and 1 no contest.

FightFan.com earlier reported that Pacquiao said on the Krystal Hart Show that he thinks Mosley will win.
“I think Mayweather vs. Mosley will be a good fight,” he said ahead of his March 13 bout against Ghanaian Joshua Clottey.

Pacquiao, who was originally slated to fight the undefeated Mayweather, defeated Clottey via unanimous decision at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. He retained his World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight belt.

Mosley, for his part, vowed to crush Mayweather, adding that their fight will be better than the lopsided Pacquiao-Clottey clash.

'The better Mayweather'
Negotiations for the Pacquiao vs Mayweather blockbuster match crumbled after the former refused to give in to the latter’s demand for Olympic-style blood testing.

Pacquiao even filed a defamation complaint against Mayweather, his father Floyd Sr., uncle Roger, and Golden Boy Promotions executives Oscar dela Hoya and Richard Schaefer after they alleged that he was taking performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs).

Roach reacted, “I get upset that some people can’t accept that Manny’s just a great fighter.”

The American trainer, for his part, said that Floyd Jr. has been respectful of him: “I like Floyd as a person ...out of the Mayweathers, he’s one of the better ones.”

But he noted that he will not allow Floyd Jr. to dictate his terms for the fight.
“I let him use my gym when he was doing ‘Dancing With The Stars’ before the Ricky Hatton fight and I’ve known him since he was a little kid. He’s not a bad guy. But the only way the fight with Manny is going to happen is we go by the commission drug-testing rules,” said Roach.

He also wished for “Pretty Boy Floyd” to stop making his own demands because “Floyd doesn’t realize that he’s killing his own sport.”

Manny Pacquiao Will Fight Floyd Mayweather and Then Retire: Doubtful

by Colin Linneweber, Senior Analyst

As expected, WBO world welterweight champion Manny “Pac-Man” Pacquiao severely outclassed former IBF welterweight titlist Joshua “The Hitter” Clottey to earn a lopsided unanimous decision victory last weekend at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, TX.

Pacquiao (51-3-2, 38 KOs), the first boxer in history to win seven world titles in seven different weight divisions, acted as a puncher and Clottey (35-4, 20 KOs) played the role of a willing punching bag.

The final punch statistics showed that Pacquiao landed 246 of 1,231 punches in comparison to Clottey’s paltry total of 108 of 399.

Now that Clottey is an utter afterthought, Pacquiao’s promoter, Bob Arum, will begin to seek for the Filipino icon’s next opponent.

The public has long clamored for a matchup that would pit Pacquiao versus “Pretty Boy” Floyd Mayweather (40-0, 25 KOs).

Unfortunately, an extremely lucrative Pacquiao-Mayweather prizefight seems unlikely because the two insanely stubborn and egotistical camps haven’t been able to agree on a drug testing protocol at this juncture.

Mayweather is now scheduled to fight current WBA welterweight champ “Sugar” Shane Mosley May 1 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

A potential adversary that has been mentioned for Pacquiao is disgraced former WBA, IBF and WBO welterweight titleholder Antonio “Tijuana Tornado” Margarito.

In order for Margarito to even be eligible to scrap, he first needs to regain his license to box.

The “Tijuana Tornado” had his boxing license justifiably revoked by the California State Athletic Commission for “at least a year” last February after it was confirmed that he attempted to battle Mosley (46-5, 39 KOs) with a plaster-like substance inside of his hand wraps.

Thankfully, Margarito was caught and proved to be a cowardly charlatan by officials at the Staples Center in Los Angeles before the match began and he had the opportunity to seriously injure Mosley with his cement fists.

Once Margarito had his illegal hand wraps removed, the “Tijuana Tornado” was promptly brutalized by Mosley and defeated by ninth round TKO.

Margarito is the quintessential tough and rugged Mexican pugilist in the ring.

Nevertheless, his attempted actions against Mosley are a cardinal sin in boxing and they should never be forgiven.

Plus, Margarito is simply not in the same sphere as Pacquiao is as a boxer.

Pacquiao’s trainer, Dedham’s Freddie Roach, said he would like to see “Pac-Man” fight Mayweather and then forever retire from the vicious sport of boxing.

“Mayweather and be done with it,” said Roach, 49, a four-time trainer of the year who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease last decade. “There are no more challenges out there. I know there are some fights, but will the general public really want to buy that? I’d like to see him go out on top and not be one of those cases that stayed too long.

Manny has things to fall back on that others don’t. He’s an actor, a singer, he’s running for Congress. Why is Roy Jones still fighting? Because he doesn’t know anything else but boxing. Manny does.”

Roach (39-13, 15 KOs) fought as a professional lightweight for nine years himself and he blames his ailment on competing in the Sweet Science for too long.

“People ask me, ‘Why would you want the guy you make the most money off to quit?’” said Roach. “We’ve done well with each other. I’d rather see him quit than go on after Mayweather. It is more important to me that he has a long and healthy life when this thing is over.”

Boxing fans want, and deserve, to see Pacquiao versus Mayweather.

Sadly, boxing has aptly been called “the red light district of sports” and fans rarely receive what they warrant.

Despite a purse that could pay both prizefighter’s in excess of $30 million apiece, Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather will never fight.

Typically, boxing and its deprived fans will be the biggest losers yet again.

Now, in the meantime, Bob Arum just needs to find Pacquiao another slouch to lambaste.

We can really tell what will happen if ever Pacquaio fight Mayweather, but I know the world is really excited about this.

Roach, Pacquiao to craft new game plan vs Mayweather

Roach confirms they already signed the contract

MANILA, Philippines – Famed American trainer Freddie Roach admitted that he and Manny Pacquiao would have to make some changes in their training when they prepare for the mega fight against Floyd Mayweather, Jr.

“This is completely opposite of the [Miguel] Cotto fight, opposite of the [Ricky] Hatton fight, and opposite from the [Oscar] de la Hoya fight,” Roach told Brad Cooney of 8countnews.com. “We will come up with a new game plan, a 10 week camp, and some changes. We will work on setting traps and taking Floyd's speed away from him.”

Roach added: “It's a difficult fight, it's the most difficult style for us to go against because he is a runner and a counter puncher.”

The two-time Trainer of the Year recipient also disclosed that the fight is official on their end as Team Pacquiao already signed the contract.

“I don't know if they officially signed, but we have,” he said.

Pacquiao and Mayweather are set to face off on March 13 at a venue to be announced. Las Vegas is said to be the frontrunner in the hunt for the venue. The press conference for the fight will be held on January 11 in the United States.

‘Best fighting the best’

Roach went on to share his thoughts on the match that is being touted as the “Fight of the Century.”

“It's the best fighting the best right now. People can say what they want, but he's very good at what he does. He's not an exciting fighter, but he's good at what he does,” he said.

Pacquiao, the World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champion, has a record of 50-3-2, with 38 knockouts.

Mayweather, the current No. 2 pound-for-pound king (who previously held the top pound-for-pound spot), holds a clean 40-0 record with 25 KOs.

“Floyd is not an offensive guy he's a very defensive fighter, but defense doesn't win fights, offense does. We will excel in those areas, and we can match his hand-speed. Mayweather is very clever, it's a challenge for both men,” the trainer continued.

Fight preparations

According to Roach, they will be working hard to prepare for the undefeated American fighter.

“Let's face it, he's never been beat. We are going to come up with a great game-plan, I know my guy can do it. We will get in shape and we will try to make it as exciting as possible.”

He said he plans to train Pacquiao for one month in the Philippines and another month in Los Angeles, California.

He earlier stated that he wants his other ward, World Boxing Association (WBA) light welterweight champion Amir Khan, to spar with the Filipino boxing sensation

Another honor

Meanwhile, Roach is slated to receive another honor before he gets back to business with training the pound-for-pound king.

Roach will be feted a commemorative custom-made belt during the World Boxing Council (WBC) Legends of Boxing Christmas Toy Drive, reported Ed de la Vega of PhilBoxing.com.

Roach, who will serve as the event’s guest of honor, will be recognized for his achievements in boxing.

The WBC Legends of Boxing will be held on December 20 at Rudy’s Grill in Los Angeles, California.

I know Roach has made Pacquiao really a living legend, I know Roach's game plan is enough to break the undefeated record of pretty boy Floyd Mayweather,Jr.
