From the Mayweathers to Adam Carolla, Too Much Racism in Boxing toward Filipinos

Over the last few months, there has been a disturbing trend in Boxing that is absolutely unacceptable. The trend is one of racial comments and discriminating remarks toward Manny Pacquiao and Filipinos as a whole. From the Mayweathers to Adam Carolla, Boxing has been littered with hate filled ignorance. Let’s examine further.

Adam Carolla

Just recently, American comedian and television host Adam Carolla made some horrible comments about Manny Pacquiao and Filipinos as a whole. Some say Carolla made these comments to try and be funny. Others say that he made them out of desperation to draw attention. I say he made these comments out of ignorance and should be held accountable for his actions. A public apology is necessary from Carolla.

Floyd Mayweather Jr

Floyd Mayweather Jr has also made some racial comments over the last few moths. Now, they may not be as vulgar as Carolla’s comments but they are just as discriminating and just as unnecessary.

“We got athletes that live in our own country that lie to the American citizens about taking certain enhancement drugs. Now, Manny Pacquiao is not even from this country and don’t even live in this country so imagine what he will tell the American people.” Floyd Mayweather Jr

“I’m happy for him. He’s a black American, and I’m a black American. I rooted him on. I wanted to see him win.” FMJ, HBO Face-Off with Max Kellerman

In addition to his comments, Floyd also discriminated against Filipino reporters during the opening press tour for Mayweather vs. Mosley. Here were Bob Arum’s comments on the situation:

"I don't care about all of this sh**. All that I care about right now is that at a press conference in my country, that people from another country were treated so horribly," said Arum, "and were descriminated against. That's what makes my blood boil, and thats's what makes me angry." Arum, Fanhouse

Floyd Sr and Roger Mayweather

Floyd Sr and Roger Mayweather have been relentless in their attacks on Manny Pacquiao. They call him a cheater and say he’s taking PEDs. But they also go on and on saying that Pacquiao is taking A-side Meth which Filipino soldiers used to take.

These comments are based on pure ignorance and have no merit. There’s no proof for any of these accusations, yet these two Mayweathers refuse to stop their hate speech.

Conclusion

Andrea Carrington Sacramento, CA “Why is there all of this racism in Boxing toward Manny and his country?”

I attribute a lot of these comments to ignorance, jealousy and hatred. But, whatever the reason, there’s no room in Boxing or in life for racism. I’m thoroughly disgusted with this mentality. People like Carolla and the Mayweathers should be held accountable for their actions and their comments. Carolla deserves to have a defamation law suit filed against him just like the Mayweathers.

As much as I despise these comments, it’s important not to respond to racism and hatred with racism and hatred. Demanding accountability and expressing disgust is one thing but expressing frustration with hatred is just as bad. Maturity is crucial when responding to racism.

Let us judged Manny Pacquiao through his ring performance as a professional boxer. Let the fists of Pacquaio and Mayweather do the talking.

Recently Floyd Mayweather Sr., the father of Floyd Mayweather Jr., went on record stating he believed Manny Pacquiao was taking some king of performance enhancement. For the record I must tell you, Manny Pacquiao has never been caught using steroids or performance enhancing drugs of any sorts. The highly respected Nevada State Athletics Commission which has given Pacquiao numerous drug tests over the years has confirmed that Pacquiao has never tested positive for any type of anabolic steroids, performance enhancing drugs or banned substances. Keith Kizer, head of the NSAC has even gone on record to
state the Commission has never found any of the numerous samples taken from Pacquiao over they years to contain anything illegal such as steroids. Nothing, zilch, nada!

During negotiations for the proposed March 13th HBO Pay-Per-View TV event, Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr., as a stipulation, team Mayweather requested that both fighters be subjected to Olympic Style drug testing. So take it which ever way you want... but it looks like team Mayweather believes Pacquiao is taking some sort of Steroid or performance enhancement.

Considering Pacquiao, who has his popularity running at an all time high, claims of steroid use could be very damaging to his name and solid reputation. Consider this too... since there is no proof and even the NSAC states as much... then these allegations are not only unwarranted, but should not have been made in public. In my opinion allegations of steroids can certainly in this case be construed as defamation of character.

So why doesn't Pacquiao sue Floyd Mayweather Sr.? I mean, after all if someone was spreading what you consider as damaging rumors about you... wouldn't you sue?

In a recent article by the Manila Standard Today, Pacquiao’s lawyer Franklin "Jeng" Gacal, gave what I considered a very good reason (smart) for not suing Mayweather Sr. over steroid allegations.

Gacal told the media publication that while it is possible to file a case against Floyd Mayweather Sr. for the unsubstantiated allegations that Pacquiao has been on some kind of performance enhancing drugs, Pacquiao told him he doesn't want to glorify the statements.

Pacquiao's reasoning for not pushing the statements further by glorifying them, is a smart one.

Pacquiao not suing Mayweather Sr. is really a smart move, there's no really good reason to be intimidated by those dumbed allegations.

Olympic-Style Drug Test for Pacquiao Versus Mayweather Fight

The latest development in the world of boxing is about a fight between two superstars in the sport – Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and Philippine boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao. Pacquiao is currently the man of the hour in the field of boxing, having only recently TKO’d another renowned boxer out of his title – Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto.

There are a lot of things going on regarding the undoubtedly anticipated fight, the proposed date of which is being set for March 13 of next year. Amid a tug-of-war regarding the venue is a rather hot topic: hints of use of performance-enhancing drugs by Pacquiao from the Mayweather camp. Mayweather’s father, Mayweather Sr., spoke of his suspicions in an interview that has made the YouTube circuit from a couple of months or so ago – although he also took those allegations back.

The demand for a random, Olympic-style drug testing prior to their proposed match next year was made by representatives of Floyd Mayweather Jr. This should certainly be interesting. Pacquiao, with his diminutive stature and humble beginnings, has become a hero of sorts in his home country, and has served as inspiration to a lot of people. He is not devoid of imperfections, but as far as boxing goes – he has done fairly well for himself. But the elder Mayweather simply seems to smell something fishy going on with Pacquiao’s chameleon-like ability to move through seven weight classes.

Pacquiao has never failed a drug test in the past, but the Mayweather camp thinks that is only because the testing isn’t as stringent as it should be.
